WAIKIKI BEACH

The most famous beach on Oahu (and possibly in the world), Waikiki Beach lives up to the hype. Though the sections in front of major hotels can get crowded, the scene - a mix of local bathing beauties, Japanese surfers, and pink-roasted visitorsis endlessly entertaining. The surf breaks are far from shore, so there's plenty of gentle water for swimming. And the options for pre- and post-beach drinks, dining, and shopping are numerous.

WATER ADVENTURES

Begin your visit by strolling along Waikiki's beautiful beaches. Stretching from Duke Kahanamoku Beach near the Hilton Hawaiian Village to the Duke Kahanamoku statue on Kuhio Beach and beyond, you can swim, snorkel, sunbathe, or take your first surfing lesson or group canoe ride.

Who knows, you may even get a surf or canoe lesson from one of the real Waikiki Beach Boys, instructors who come from a long line of watermen taught by Duke Kahanamoku himself. For beginners, the gentle waves at Waikiki Beach (once surfed only by Hawaiian royals) are ideal. Ask a friendly Beach Boy for a lesson or rent a board by the surfboard racks on the sand.
